History of Johnson C. Smith Theological Seminary
The seminary was founded by the Reverend John C. Smith, a prominent African American minister and civil rights leader, and was the first African American-led seminary in the United States. It was originally located in Norfolk, Virginia and moved to Atlanta, Georgia in 1876.
