CUNY’s EdCast Program looks at “Common Cause or Great Divide? Education in Cuba and the U.S.”
Guests: Hostos Community College professors Elys Vasquez-Isan (Education) and Elisabeth Tappeiner (Library)
Host: Hostos Professor Linda Hirsch (English)

Can Cuba maintain its international position in the forefront of literacy education? How will a more open relationship with the U.S. affect its education policies? This two-part special brings the latest information on education in Cuba: its successes, challenges, and where it’s headed. Linda Hirsch interviews Professors Elys Vasquez-Iscan and Lisa Tappeiner, two CUNY professors who recently visited Cuba with other Hostos colleagues to exchange ideas and practices. Part One considers the early childhood years in Cuba, and Part Two examines higher education. The program is a candid, up-to-the minute discussion about education practices in Cuba today and how the U.S. can help promote positive change.

About Linda Hirsch: Host Linda Hirsch, Ph.D., is a professor of English at Hostos Community College/CUNY. She is an expert on literacy development among both native and non-native speakers of English. Prof. Hirsch has taught graduate students at Columbia University Teacher’s College, New York University, and the CUNY Graduate Center. She has also served as a content consultant on PBS’ television series Ghostwriter and as the education consultant and producer of an education segment on BronxNet’s, Open, a live cable TV program.
