2. How to Remove Valve Springs (Overhead Valve Removal Tool) • Cars Simplified

This episode of Cars Simplified: Season Three reveals how to remove valve springs with a "Universal" Overhead Valve Removal Tool (Autocraft AC521 is shown in the video, but other companies make the tool as well) and different techniques that can be used, including a fast and aggressive approach.

The tool shown in the video is designed to grab on to and compress the valve spring, so that the keepers can be removed. Once the keepers are out of the way, the spring and retainer can be pulled out of the way, and the valve is free to be pulled out.

The head must be off the block to perform this properly.

Steve just used the neodymium magnet he had laying around, but you can buy one that works better for your tool.

Ending: Brumby on a road trip! Zen mode.

5. BTR changing valve springs

HOW TO VIDEO: Valve springs are one of the most critical, and most often overlooked, components in your racing engine. The incorrect selection of the racing valve springs is one of the leading causes of engine failure. In addition, many racers suffer failure due to the incorrect installation and improper handling of the valve springs. Watch Brian Tooley show you how to properly change the valve springs while the engine is still in your car.

7. How To Remove Valve Springs In The Car -EricTheCarGuy

How To Remove Valve Springs In The Car came about after the last video I did about removing valve springs from a cylinder head.

youtube.com/watch?v=qEe8C5u1LWg

So for this video I show how to do the process while the cylinder head is still attached to the engine inside the vehicle. As stated in the video, if you don't have compressed air to work with, you can also use a piece of rope or rubber hose. I'd recommend a piece of cloths line. It's a good diameter and seems to work well as a substitute to compressed air. So the next time you need to do valve seals while the engine is still in the vehicle, you can use this information to get that job done.

FYI there is a video of the disassembly of the engine available to Premium Members of EricTheCarGuy.com. Here's a link if you're interested in that.

9. Remove and Reinstall Valve Spring in Less than 2 Minutes! NO SPECIAL TOOLS

This video shows how to install and reinstall valve springs on a Subaru Wrx EJ205 cylinder head. This method is quick, simple, and can be used on many other cylinder heads.

Removing the retainer keepers requires: vice grips, a spark plug socket, and a pen magnet.

Reinstalling the retainer keepers requires: 4x folded piece of plastic, spark plug socket, vice grips.

I found this method on Youtube. Thanks Youtubers! I am reposting to make this technique more visible and to show how quick it is. Hopefully it can help you!

This is my other valve spring / keeper tool:

In this video im going over a few techniques to remove and install valve springs on a cylinder head, i also show you some of the tools to buy that make the job easier. Bent valve springs often happen when a timing chain or belt break or stretch causing the piston to contact the valves. most people will consider the engine done one this happens, how ever most times the engine can be repaired relatively inexpensively by replacing the bent valves.

14. How to Install Valves, Valve Springs, Retainers, Valve Seals, and Keepers. [LS Engines]

How to Install Valve Springs, Retainers, Valve Seals, and Keepers. This is definitely not a first-ever type of process, but it is an important step in assembling a cylinder head properly. Lapping valves properly and keeping everything clean through the process will help ensure that your valves seal properly. Leaky valves equal lower compression or even destruction. Leaky oil seals also lead to unwanted blue smoke out the tailpipe. Keep those valve guides very clean and drop the valves in with light oil. Lube the tips of the valve stems when installing the seals or installing the valves through the seals.

15. How To Remove and Replace Valves in a Cylinder Head -EricTheCarGuy

If you need to remove a valve from a cylinder head either to replace the valve or replace the valve seals, this video will help you do that. You can also do this process while the cylinder head is still fastened to the engine block with some tools. To do that, put the piston at TDC compression stroke and make sure both valves are closed. You can then run compressed air into the cylinder to hold the valves in place as you compress the valve springs. I often use my compression tester hose to do this. You need to remove the schrader valve first before you attempt this, if not, air will not flow into the cylinder. You can also use a piece of rope or equivalent to keep the valves from dropping into the cylinder while you work. This method works well if you're just replacing the valve seals. You won't be able to use the large spring compressor however. You'll have to use the Lisle or some other type of compressor do manage that task. Here's some useful links for you.

Tools.

Large Spring Compressor: jbtoolsales.com/gearwrench-383d-valve-spring-compressor/#oid=1002_1

Lisle Spring Compressor Tool: jbtoolsales.com/lisle-36050-valve-keeper-remover-and-installer-kit/#oid=1002_1

I had a heck of a time trying to find the Honda special tool and was not able to provide a link for you. Sorry about that. The Lisle tool will work just fine, OR I've seen some home made versions of that type of extension that looked like they'd work pretty well.
