..
Alcoholics Anonymous - The Original Six Steps of AA, in Bill Wilson's own hand-writing.
Step 1: Admitted hopeless
Step 2: Got honest with self
Step 3: Got honest with another
Step 4: Made amends
Step 5: Helped others without demand
Step 6: Prayed to God as you understand him
Original Six Steps
From 'Pass It On': The Story of Bill Wilson and How the A. A. Message Reached the World
1. We admitted that we were licked, that we were powerless over alcohol.
2. We made a moral inventory of our defects or sins.
3. We confessed or shared our shortcomings with another person in confidence.
4. We made restitution to all those we had harmed by our drinking.
5. We tried to help other alcoholics, with no thought of reward in money or prestige.
6. We prayed to whatever God we thought there was for power to practice these precepts.

STEP 1
We admitted we were
powerless over alcohol - that
our lives had become
unmanageable.
STEP 2
Came to believe that a Power
greater than ourselves could
restore us to sanity
STEP 3
Made a decision to turn our
will and our lives over to the
care of God as we understood
Him.
STEP 4
Made a searching and fearless
moral inventory of ourselves.
STEP 5
Admitted to God, to ourselves,
and to another human being
the exact nature of our wrongs.
STEP 6
Were entirely ready to have
God remove all these defects
of character.
STEP 7
Humbly asked Him to remove
our shortcomings.
STEP 8
Made a list of all persons we
had harmed, and became
willing to make amends to
them all.
STEP 9
Made direct amends to such
people wherever possible,
except when to do so would
injure them or others.
STEP 10
Continued to take personal
inventory and when we were
wrong promptly admitted it.
STEP 11
Sought through prayer and
meditation to improve our
conscious contact with God as
we understood Him, praying
only for knowledge of
His will for us and the power
to carry that out.
STEP 12
Having had a spiritual
awakening as the result of
these steps, we tried to
carry this message to
alcoholics, and to practice
these principles in all
our affairs.

10. Big Book History #16: Creating a Story - The 6 Step Myth
Bill Schaberg reviews Bill Wilson’s unreliability as a historian and then goes on to debunk his story of the Six Step Program – which Wilson claimed was the “pretty consistent procedure” for recovery before the Twelve Steps were written.
Having eliminated those alleged Six Steps as the forerunner and source of the Twelve Steps, Schaberg then presents extensive evidence to support his contention that the Twelve Steps – rather than being an encapsulation of the collective experience of early A.A. members – were instead a summary of Bill Wilson’s own experience as he got sober.

14. Glenn F Chesnut Oxford groups and AA
Kevin Hanlon, one of the filmmakers behind the Emmy-winning PBS Documentary Bill W: The Creative Force Behind Alcoholics Anonymous, created an incredible tribute video featuring never-before-seen interview clips with the late A.A. historian, Glenn Chesnut.
15. Episode 27: Steps 6 and 7 with Benn and John
There are many people in Alcoholics Anonymous today for whom an interventionist God has nothing to do with their sobriety. Certainly as an atheist, I fall into that camp, so my perspective on Steps Six and Seven is much different from those early AAs who first experienced recovery within the context of the Christian evangelical movement known as the Oxford Group. Grateful for the experience of our founders, and building upon their work, and I rephrased these Steps within the context of the times in which I live, and the belief system that I hold.
In my view, Step Six simply involved acquiring a new attitude as a result of experiencing the previous five steps. Those steps prepared me to do the hard work necessary for improved mental and emotional health. I was ready to change the way I think, feel, and behave—to build character. In Step Seven, I realized that I would need help with this, so with humility and persistence, I did and still do whatever is necessary to fully engage in the recovery process, so that I may become a healthier, happier and more balanced person.
By the time I arrived at these Steps, I reached a point in my recovery where I possessed more self-awareness than at any other time in my life. From this experience, I learned that I needed other people who supported me in my desire to stop drinking, so it was important that I abandon a life based solely on self-sufficiency, and that I do away with the obstacles that blocked me from forming honest and open relationships with others. This to me, is what Steps Six and Seven are all about.
I hope you enjoy this podcast episode in which Benn and I discuss these two Steps.
