STEP 1
We admitted we were
powerless over alcohol - that
our lives had become
unmanageable.

Came to believe that a Power
greater than ourselves could
restore us to sanity

Made a decision to turn our
will and our lives over to the
care of God as we understood
Him.

moral inventory of ourselves.
STEP 5
Admitted to God, to ourselves,
and to another human being
the exact nature of our wrongs.

Were entirely ready to have
God remove all these defects
of character.

Humbly asked Him to remove

Made a list of all persons we
had harmed, and became
willing to make amends to

Made direct amends to such
people wherever possible,

injure them or others.

Continued to take personal

wrong promptly admitted it.

Sought through prayer and
meditation to improve our
conscious contact with God as
we understood Him, praying
only for knowledge of
His will for us and the power
to carry that out.

This series explores the Oxford Group pamphlet “How to Listen to God.” Written in the late 1930’s by Ohio based Chaplain John Batterson, it summarizes the original practice of Two Way Prayer. The pamphlet circulated widely in Akron, Ohio among AA’s early members and was reintroduced to the recovery community largely through the tireless efforts of AA archivist Wally P. originator of the popular Back to Basics series that takes newcomers through the 12-Steps in 4-week sessions. Wally is Father Bill’s guest, and the pamphlet along with his website and other works are linked below.

Matt D., Executive Director All Addicts Anonymous (AAA) discusses the original AA program focusing on the Four Absolutes of Honesty, Purity, Unselfishness, and Love. In this episode Matt and Father Bill explore the deeper meanings of PURITY. Of the Four Absolutes, it’s probably the least understood and the most feared and often discounted. It’s also the one that may prove the dangers of “half-measures.” The episode builds on an article from the AAA archives titled Frank Buchman’s Cure. It’s a short read available in the Show Notes.

The Four Absolutes first appear in the work of Robert E. Speer, a Presbyterian missionary and scholar who studied the life and teachings of Jesus. Speer concluded that Jesus’ own life reflected a set of absolute moral standards that could effectively serve to guide us in determining the course and content of our thoughts, decisions, and actions. Speer grouped these moral guidelines under the headings of Honesty, Purity, Unselfishness and Love and they later formed the foundation of the Oxford Group program. When Bill Wilson was asked where the Absolutes could be found in his 12-Step formula, he replied, “I put them in Steps Six and Seven.”

TEST - When the flow of thoughts slows down, stop. Take a good look at what you have written. Not every thought comes from God. So we need to test our thoughts. Here is where the written record helps us to be able to look at them.
o Are these thoughts completely honest, pure unselfish and loving?
o Are these thoughts in line with our duties -- to our family -- to our country?
o Are these thoughts in line with our understanding of the teachings found in our spiritual literature?

The 4 Absolutes and quiet time in the early days of Alcoholics Anonymous
The 4 Absolutes = Honesty, Purity, Unselfishness and Love.
Much of the spiritual principles that Alcoholics Anonymous have today came from the Oxford Group.
Meditation or being in the presence of God was practiced to establish that relationship with God.
The 4 absolutes was considered God's will when the Oxford Group practiced quiet time.
The 4 spiritual principles of surrender, sharing, restitution and guidance came from the Oxford group.
The opposite of dishonesty is honesty, the opposite of resentment is purity, the opposite of selfishness is unselfishness, the opposite of fear is love.
